TEACH CHILDREN that SHOPLIFTING IS STEALING

Help young people in your community learn the consequences of shoplifting. Research shows that retail theft often leads to more serious juvenile crimes. Shoplifting is a common element in the criminal history of countless inmates. Yet many young people view shoplifting as just a harmless game.

Ideal for use by educators, law enforcement and youth leaders

In each community, young people are surrounded by people who form a "Circle of Influence." This" Circle of Influence" includes law enforcement professionals, merchants, Chamber of Commerce members, retail merchants, loss prevention officers, business owners, educators, churches, youth organizations, service clubs, friends and families. If one segment of the "Circle of Influence" teaches the legal and social consequences of shoplifting, but another segment chooses to ignore the offense, the message to our young people is, "It's OK to steal. There are no consequences." Is that the message we want our children to learn? Is that the set of values we want our children to embrace? That’s why we developed the Shoplifting IS Stealing!™ Community Program -- to provide products and resources to assist each of these influence centers in helping young people learn there are consequences to choices they make about shoplifting.

A 20-minute video - A lifetime of impact

Shoplifting IS Stealing!™ teaches viewers the cold, hard facts about the widespread, costly crime of shoplifting. The story unfolds through the eyes of 17-year-old Brian, a star athlete and good student who is in a holding cell after being charged with his fourth shoplifting offense. Because of the circumstances surrounding the latest offense, Brian is now facing adult court - and the possible ruin of his college dreams. Brian tells his cellmate how he got caught up in the spiraling web of juvenile shoplifting and how he landed in the holding cell. Brian flashbacks over four different shoplifting incidents beginning with the simple at of stealing candy when he was 11, giving in to peer pressure by stealing a CD when he was 12, stealing a necklace for a girlfriend’s birthday gift at 16 and finally at 17 being apprehended with a group of friends for stealing from a convenience store. The story includes the emotional, social and legal impact that these shoplifting incidents had on him, his friends and his family. The story teaches children (and adults) that:

  • That shoplifting is stealing.
  • That stealing is a crime - with legal consequences.
  • How shoplifting can affect their lives - resulting in embarrassment, court fees, fines, even a criminal record.
  • What shoplifting costs their parents, honest consumers and the community.

Early intervention is the key to preventing juvenile crime. That is why Shoplifting IS Stealing!™ targets children in grades 3 through 8. The compelling story also makes it suitable for presentations to high school students … parent groups … service clubs … even chambers of commerce and merchant organizations. It has been successfully used as a program for community service club meetings to explore the impact that shoplifting has on the community. The video was shown followed by a discussion facilitated by a local law enforcement officer and a retail merchant .
